Chapter 14 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE|

Daniel Whitmore had built his career on being the man wealthy families hired when they needed a problem to disappear without attracting attention.

He denied taking money for personal gain. He claimed the payments were legal fees for managing confidential guardianship arrangements. But the letters suggested that Evelyn had believed he was profiting from a scheme intended to protect vulnerable people.

Elena's team traced the transfers to a dormant trust established shortly after Sarah's birth. The trust had paid Whitmore's firm for decades, with periodic deposits from companies connected to both the Montgomery and Volkov businesses.

The amounts were too large to dismiss as ordinary legal fees.

Sarah wanted to confront him immediately.

Elena refused.

"We need bank records, testimony, and an opportunity for him to respond. Otherwise, he'll turn this into a story about an angry woman accusing a respected attorney."

"How long do we wait?"

"Until we can prove what happened."

While the investigation continued, Beatrice requested another meeting with Sarah.

This time, she came without an assistant or a driver. She looked older than Sarah remembered.

"I want to tell you what happened," Beatrice said.

"Then tell me everything."

Beatrice admitted that she had opposed Maria's relationship with Stefan because she feared a merger between their families would threaten the Montgomerys' influence. She had met Maria at the clinic and warned her that powerful people were planning to use the unborn child as leverage.

"I told her to leave," Beatrice confessed. "I believed separation would protect her."

"Did you falsify the records?"

"No. Daniel handled the legal arrangements."

"Did you know he was being paid?"

"Yes."

"Did you know I was sent into foster care?"

Beatrice's eyes filled.

"I was told you had been placed with a safe family."

"But you never checked."

"No."

Sarah stood and walked to the window.

"You could have found me at any time."

"I was afraid."

"So was I. I was a child."

Beatrice had no answer.

Sarah turned back.

"You didn't merely make a mistake. You watched the lie become comfortable, and you chose to live inside it."

"I know."

"Do you?"

Beatrice placed a small envelope on the table. Inside was an old photograph of Maria, Katarina, and a third woman standing outside the clinic.

The third woman was Evelyn Hart.

On the back, Maria had written three words:

They know everything.

Beatrice said she had kept the photograph because it was the last thing Maria had given her.

Sarah took it, but she did not forgive her.

Before leaving, Beatrice added one final detail.

"Daniel wasn't working alone. Someone inside the Volkov family authorized the original payments."

Sarah froze.

"Who?"

May you like

Beatrice looked toward the door.

"I never learned the name."
