Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT|

White lilies filled the Montgomery penthouse before sunrise, their fragrance spreading through rooms where Sarah Montgomery had learned to make herself invisible.

At thirty-two, Sarah had been married to Richard Montgomery for three years. She once believed he was different from his wealthy family. He had met her in a Brooklyn coffee shop, laughed at her terrible jokes, and promised that money would never determine their future.

Then his grandfather died, a trust fund unlocked, and Richard gradually became the man his mother wanted him to be.

That morning, Beatrice Montgomery inspected the arrangements for the family foundation's annual masquerade gala.

"You're wearing that black dress tonight?" Beatrice asked.

"It's the only formal dress I own."

"Then perhaps you should remain somewhere the photographers won't notice you."

Sarah glanced at Richard, who barely lifted his eyes from his phone.

"I'm your wife," she reminded him.

"And tonight is an important event," he replied. "Please don't make things difficult."

Those words hurt because she remembered the man who once promised to stand beside her against the world.

Sarah had other worries, too. A private investigator had recently uncovered evidence that her deceased mother, Maria Bennett, might have lived under a false identity. Before coming to America, Maria might have been Maria Conti, a woman connected to Stefan Volkov, a powerful European industrialist who had spent decades searching for someone.

Sarah carried the investigator's letter in her handbag.

She intended to investigate after the gala.

At the Pierre Hotel that evening, hundreds of guests gathered beneath chandeliers and golden decorations. Sarah found her assigned seat near the service entrance. Her place card read Mrs. Richard Montgomery, as though her own name were an embarrassment.

At seven forty-five, Beatrice stepped onto the stage.

"Before the auction begins, we must address an unfortunate matter."

The spotlight turned toward Sarah.

"Several valuable items have disappeared from our home," Beatrice announced. "And credible information suggests that Sarah may be involved."

Security officers approached.

"I haven't stolen anything," Sarah protested.

"Then you won't mind cooperating."

Her handbag was emptied before five hundred guests. When no jewelry appeared, Beatrice demanded a more humiliating search. A guard reached toward Sarah's dress, tearing its shoulder strap as she pushed him away.

Gasps filled the ballroom. Phones rose to capture her distress.

Then a man in a black tuxedo stood near the rear doors.

"That is enough."

Stefan Volkov crossed the ballroom and placed his jacket around Sarah's shoulders.

He looked at Beatrice with unmistakable disappointment.

"Before you accuse this woman of stealing," he said, "perhaps you should explain why you recognize her mother's real name."

May you like

Beatrice went completely still.

And Sarah realized the accusation was only the beginning.
