Chapter 17 - THE FILE MARKED PHASE TWO|

Elena immediately arranged for the storage records to be preserved and for the relevant authorities to review the materials. Sarah resisted the urge to open every box herself, but the ledger had already changed the investigation.

The phrase Phase Two appeared in several documents.

Some referred to financial transfers. Others referenced identity changes and sealed court filings. One document listed a future date, only three months away.

"What happens then?" Sarah asked.

"We don't know yet," Elena replied.

Stefan recognized the company name on the storage contract. It had once been used by his cousin Adrian to manage a private investment portfolio.

"If Adrian was involved, someone may have inherited his instructions."

"Could it be Daniel?" Sarah asked.

"Possibly. But there may be another person."

The investigation uncovered a final payment made from the dormant trust to a private medical research organization. The payment description referenced a coded case number that matched Olivia's adoption record.

Olivia joined Sarah and Stefan in reviewing the file.

"My entire life has been documented by people who never asked me what I wanted," she said.

Sarah understood the feeling.

"We can decide what happens next."

Together, they requested access to the sealed adoption files through the proper legal channels. They also contacted the authorities about the suspected identity manipulation and financial misconduct.

Daniel Whitmore's office responded by announcing that he would be stepping away from several professional responsibilities while the allegations were reviewed.

It was not an admission of guilt.

But it was the first time he had retreated.

Then Katarina found something hidden inside Maria's journal: a small key taped beneath the back cover. The key belonged to a safety deposit box at a bank that had merged with another institution years earlier.

The bank located the box, but access required verification from Maria's estate.

After weeks of paperwork, the box was opened.

Inside lay a cassette tape, a second photograph, and a sealed envelope addressed to Stefan.

The cassette was labeled with a date from the night Maria disappeared.

Stefan stared at it.

"I haven't heard her voice in twenty-seven years."

Sarah took his hand.

"You don't have to listen alone."

They played the tape in Elena's office.

At first, there was static. Then Maria's voice emerged, frightened but clear.

"Stefan, if you're hearing this, someone has convinced you that I left willingly. Please don't believe them. I tried to reach you. I tried three times."

A door slammed in the background.

Maria whispered, "They're here."

Then another voice spoke.

It was not Beatrice's.

It was a man's voice, calm and familiar.

"Take the child. Leave the mother."

The tape ended.

Stefan stared at the machine.

Sarah's blood turned cold.

May you like

Someone had ordered her separated from her mother.

And that person had known she was alive.
