Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK|

Katherine Vale returned to Pennsylvania under a different name, but the investigator located her through an old property record and a medical appointment.
Sarah did not travel immediately. Elena arranged a meeting at a neutral location, and Stefan agreed to remain nearby without pressuring the woman to speak.
When Katherine entered the room, Sarah recognized the crescent-shaped scar from the photograph.
Stefan stood.
"Katarina."
The older woman stopped.
For a moment, neither sibling moved.
Then Katarina crossed the room and embraced him.
"I thought you would never find me."
"I thought you were dead."
"I was dead to the family. That was the only way I could keep the child safe."
She turned toward Sarah.
"You have Maria's eyes."
Sarah felt her throat tighten.
"Did you know my mother?"
"I loved her like a sister."
Katarina explained that Maria had discovered a plan to use her relationship with Stefan as leverage in a corporate struggle. Several powerful men wanted access to assets controlled by the Volkov family. They believed a marriage between Stefan and Maria would create complications they could not manage.
Daniel Whitmore had arranged false correspondence, altered medical records, and a network of intermediaries designed to separate the couple.
But Katarina refused to identify Beatrice as the mastermind.
"Beatrice was involved," she said. "That doesn't mean she controlled everything."
"Did you take me from my mother?" Sarah asked.
Katarina closed her eyes.
"Maria asked me to help you escape. She believed someone would hurt you if they found out you were Stefan's child. We arranged temporary guardianship while she tried to make contact with him."
"Why didn't you stay with me?"
"Because I was followed. I was told that if I contacted you, the people watching me would learn where you were."
Sarah's anger rose.
"So you watched from a distance while I moved through foster homes?"
"I tried to intervene twice. Both times, your records changed before I could reach you. I believed the people responsible had more power than I did."
"Did my mother know?"
"She knew I would keep trying."
Katarina handed Sarah a sealed envelope that had been hidden for decades.
Maria's name was written across the front.
Inside was a letter addressed to her daughter.
If you are reading this, I failed to give you the childhood you deserved. I need you to know that you were never unwanted. I made choices out of fear, and some of them hurt the people I loved. But every decision began with one promise: you would have a chance to grow up free.
Sarah pressed the letter against her chest.
Then she noticed the final line.
If Katarina finds you, ask her what happened to the second baby.
Sarah looked up.
"What second baby?"
May you like
Katarina's expression changed.
"I was hoping Maria had never written that."
