Chapter 18 - THE VOICE ON THE TAPE|

The recording was sent to an independent audio laboratory for authentication. Investigators cautioned that identifying a voice from a decades-old recording could be difficult, especially without a verified comparison sample.

Sarah listened to the tape again with headphones.

The man's voice was controlled, almost gentle. That made the words more frightening.

"Take the child. Leave the mother."

Stefan sat beside her, his face drained of color.

"I should have protected her."

"You didn't know what was happening."

"I was there. I was close enough to have heard the truth if I had asked the right questions."

Sarah removed the headphones.

"You can't keep punishing yourself for every decision someone else manipulated. But you can help us find the person who gave that order."

For once, Stefan accepted comfort without turning it into another apology.

The laboratory confirmed that the tape was consistent with the period indicated on its label. It could not conclusively identify the speaker, but it detected a second voice in the background: a woman asking whether the transfer papers had been signed.

Elena compared the recording with a surviving interview from a retired corporate executive who had worked with Adrian Volkov.

The voices were similar enough to justify further examination.

The executive was located in Florida. During an interview with investigators, he admitted that Adrian had organized secret meetings involving Daniel Whitmore and several representatives of the Montgomery family.

He claimed the purpose had been to prevent a corporate takeover, not to harm Maria.

"Who ordered the child removed?" Sarah asked through Elena.

The executive refused to answer.

Then he requested protection.

He revealed that Adrian had kept a private correspondence file in a bank vault. The file had been transferred to a successor trustee after Adrian's death, but its location was unknown.

A search of estate records identified the trustee as a company now controlled by an anonymous holding structure.

The structure's current director was Daniel Whitmore's daughter, Vanessa.

Sarah had never heard the name before.

Vanessa Whitmore had lived overseas for years and maintained no public relationship with her father. She had recently returned to New York and purchased a property near the old Volkov residence.

Elena warned Sarah not to jump to conclusions.

"Being related to Daniel does not make Vanessa responsible for his actions."

"I know."

"But someone has been moving records and activating old accounts. We need to find out who."

That night, Sarah received a message from an unknown number.

Your mother survived longer than they told you.

Attached was a scanned hospital record showing Maria's name and a date several years after the night she supposedly died.

Sarah stared at the screen.

If the document was genuine, everything they knew about Maria's final years was wrong.

She called Stefan.

"There's another record."

He arrived within twenty minutes.

Together, they examined the image.

At the bottom was a physician's signature and a location: a private clinic in northern Italy.

Maria might not have died when everyone believed.
