Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO RECOGNIZED MARIA|

Beatrice Montgomery had spent forty years building a reputation that made people afraid to question her.

She had guided her late husband through financial crises, arranged strategic marriages, and helped turn the Montgomery Foundation into a symbol of old New York philanthropy.

Now the foundation's board wanted answers.

The missing earrings had been recovered. The hotel's internal review suggested that security had been pressured to continue searching Sarah after finding nothing in her purse. Reporters had also obtained photographs of Stefan Volkov escorting Sarah from the ballroom.

Beatrice summoned Richard to her private office.

"You need to control your wife."

Richard stared at her.

"She's asking for a divorce."

"Then stop her before this becomes a financial disaster."

"She has a father now."

Beatrice's expression hardened.

"An unconfirmed relationship with a foreign industrialist doesn't make her untouchable."

"The test confirmed it."

For the first time, Beatrice appeared genuinely frightened.

Richard noticed.

"What do you know about Maria Conti?"

"Nothing."

"Mom, you recognized the name."

"I recognized a name from a very long time ago."

"Whose name?"

Beatrice rose from her desk.

"You're confusing me with someone who owes you explanations."

Meanwhile, Sarah and Elena visited a retired hospital administrator named Margaret Ellis. She had worked at the clinic where Maria gave birth and initially refused to discuss the case.

Then Sarah showed her the photograph.

Margaret's face changed.

"I remember that woman."

"Maria?"

"She was frightened. She kept asking whether anyone had called a man named Stefan."

Sarah gripped the edge of the desk.

"Did anyone call him?"

Margaret hesitated.

"Someone came to see her. A woman in an expensive coat. She told Maria that contacting Stefan would put the baby in danger."

"Who was she?"

"I never learned her name. But I remember the family crest on her brooch."

Margaret sketched it on a sheet of paper: a silver bird above a shield.

Elena recognized the symbol from an old Montgomery Foundation archive.

Sarah stared at the drawing.

"Beatrice?"

"Possibly," Elena said. "We need corroboration before accusing anyone."

Margaret then revealed something else. Before leaving the clinic, Maria had deposited a sealed envelope with the administrator, asking that it be given to her daughter when she turned thirty.

The envelope had disappeared during a records transfer.

Sarah's stomach tightened.

"Who had access?"

Margaret gave them three names. One belonged to a former foundation accountant who had died years earlier.

Another belonged to Beatrice's longtime assistant, Rosa Delgado.

The third name was unfamiliar.

Daniel Whitmore, a private attorney who had represented both the Montgomery family and Stefan's company during an international dispute.

Sarah looked at Elena.

"How many people knew my mother?"

May you like

Elena closed the notebook.

"Enough to hide her. And possibly enough to have hidden the truth about you."
