Chapter 14 - THE FINAL COURTROOM VERDICT
The final hearing to finalize the restraining orders and restitution payments was quick and decisive. Tyler, appearing disheveled and humble, barely spoke as the judge reaffirmed the multi-year sentence of supervised probation and mandatory counseling. As I left the courthouse, I passed my mother in the hallway. She looked aged and fragile, but she stopped to tell me she was proud of how far I’d come.
I looked at her, truly seeing the woman who had watched me on the concrete and chose to stay silent. “I did this in spite of you, not because of you,” I said, walking past her to the exit. I didn't need her pride anymore, and I didn't need her validation. I was complete without it.
