Chapter 10 - THE PHYSICAL THERAPY BREAKTHROUGH

The breakthrough happened six months into my new regimen. During a session on the treadmill with body-weight support, I pushed myself harder than I ever had, focusing on my gait and the firing pattern of my right quad. My therapist noticed a change in my stride, a more fluid, consistent motion that signaled the nerves were finally re-learning their pathway.
“Marcus, look at the monitor,” she said, pointing to the real-time gait analysis. “You’re not compensating for the numbness anymore. Your brain is re-mapping.” I looked, and for the first time in over two years, I saw a normal stride. It wasn't perfect, and it certainly wasn't without pain, but it was my movement—unassisted, deliberate, and entirely real. I walked out of the clinic that afternoon without my forearm crutch, feeling the cool autumn air on my face, knowing I had finally won.
