Chapter 12 - THE CONFRONTATION AT THE DINER

A few weeks after the trial, I ran into Jake at the local diner where we used to meet for coffee. He looked smaller, more tired, and completely drained of his previous arrogance. He tried to ignore me, but I walked over to his booth, standing tall on my own two feet.
“I heard about the verdict,” he muttered, not looking up from his breakfast. “Tyler’s destroyed, Marcus. He lost his job, his girl, everything.” I looked down at him, feeling no sense of triumph, only a calm detachment. “He destroyed himself, Jake. He just needed someone like me to hold up the mirror so he could finally see it.” I left the diner, leaving him with the bill and the silence of a truth he couldn't laugh away.
