Chapter 1 - THE BACKYARD BETRAYAL

“Stand up, you pathetic fraud.” That was the last thing my brother Tyler said before he shoved me out of my wheelchair, sending me crashing onto the hot concrete of our family’s backyard patio. I hit the ground palms first, the gravel biting into my raw skin, my right leg twisting into a sharp, painful angle that sent fire up my spine. Fifty relatives looked on, their laughter turning into a low, mocking hum as they pulled out their phones to film the spectacle. Tyler, emboldened by the crowd and the beer in his system, stood over me and declared that my two-year recovery from a spinal fusion surgery was nothing more than a comfortable scam designed to bleed our parents dry.
My mother stood by the picnic table, pale and trembling, while my cousin Jake and Aunt Linda openly cheered Tyler on, chanting for me to "prove" I wasn't lying by standing up. I tried to push myself off the ground, but my L4-L5 fusion—the fourteen screws and four rods holding my lower back together—screamed in protest, and my leg refused to provide the necessary support. Tyler grabbed the front of my shirt, shaking me while calling me a leech and a con artist, and the backyard crowd began a rhythmic, cruel chant. Just as Tyler raised a fist to strike, a cold, authoritative voice cut through the air: “That’s my patient you’re assaulting.” The backyard fell into absolute silence.
