Chapter 4

Chapter 4 - The Agent’s CallThe following morning, the oppressive weight of being watched followed Norah back to the West Village. She stood by the living room window, pulling back the sheer linen curtains just an inch. Parked in the exact same spot across the street was the black sedan, and standing beside it was the same man in a dark trench coat, tracking her movements with quiet vigilance. Before she could process the escalating paranoia, her cell phone vibrated violently against the coffee table. The caller ID displayed an unknown number.
She swiped to answer, pressing the phone to her ear. "Mrs. Callahan?" a calm, authoritative male voice inquired. "Yes," Norah replied, her heart hammering against her ribs. "My name is Daniel Park. I’m a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation," the voice stated evenly. "We need to talk about your husband, Dominic. And more importantly, Mrs. Callahan, we need to talk about why federal assets are currently assigned to watch your apartment—and why someone else’s operatives are watching you, too."
Norah’s breath hitched in her throat, the room spinning slightly. "Federal assets? You're watching us?" "Mr. Callahan has been under active surveillance for eighteen months regarding international money laundering, customs evasion, and racketeering," Agent Park explained without missing a beat. "We intercepted your confrontation last night, Mrs. Callahan. You’ve stumbled into something far larger than marital infidelity. Your husband is interfacing with dangerous transnational syndicates, and as of right now, your life is in immediate, active danger. Pack a bag. My team is downstairs to bring you in."

Within twenty minutes, Norah was escorted out of the apartment building by two federal agents in plainclothes, bundled swiftly into the back of an unmarked SUV while the black sedan across the street accelerated aggressively in a failed attempt to intercept them. They sped through the Manhattan traffic, sirens blaring softly under federal escort, heading toward a secure, undisclosed FBI field safehouse in lower Manhattan.
Sitting in the secure debriefing room across from Agent Park—a sharp-eyed man in his late forties with salt-and-pepper hair and an air of absolute competence—Norah unzipped her leather tote bag. Without a word, she slid her meticulously detailed notebook across the steel table. Park flipped it open, scanning the handwritten shell company names, dates, and financial ledgers. His eyebrows rose steadily with every turned page. "Where did you get this, Mrs. Callahan?" he asked, looking up with profound astonishment. "I paid attention," Norah replied coldly. "For three years, my husband thought I was blind. He gave me the roadmap to his entire criminal empire without ever realizing I was taking notes."
