Chapter 10 - Rebuilding the FoundationWith the legal battle moving into its methodical pre-trial phase, Norah began the psychological and physical task of reclaiming her existence. She packed up the remaining reminders of Dominic’s presence in the West Village apartment—every tailored suit left in the closet, every piece of designer luggage, every cold, sterile relic of his criminal wealth—and had them hauled away to a municipal donation and disposal facility.

In their place, she invited Carla over to help redesign the master bedroom. They painted the walls a soothing, warm ivory, replaced the heavy velvet drapes with sheer linen that welcomed the morning Manhattan sun, and transformed the former corporate study into a bright, welcoming nursery filled with soft pastel colors, handmade quilts, and shelves stacked with children's classics.

Her pregnancy progressed smoothly, monitored by a compassionate medical team that ensured her stress levels remained strictly controlled. Every gentle kick against her ribs served as a fierce, anchoring reminder of what truly mattered. She wasn't defined by the lies she had survived; she was defined by the unbreakable life she was actively protecting.

Carla watched her sister assemble a wooden rocking chair one afternoon, smiling warmly. "You know, Norah, most people would have broken down completely after walking into that bedroom three months ago."

Norah paused, tightening a final screw on the chair leg, and stood up, wiping her hands on a soft cloth. She looked out the window at the bustling New York street below, watching cabs weave through traffic under a clear autumn sky. "I did break down, Carla," Norah murmured softly. "At least, the version of me that needed Dominic Callahan to feel safe broke into a million pieces. But what rose up in her place? That woman is never letting anyone pull the wool over her eyes again."
