Chapter 7 - The Threat at the Gate

The fragile peace established within the walls of the Mercer estate was brutally shattered on a crisp Monday afternoon. Claire had taken Lily down to the local organic bakery in downtown Boston to pick up pastries for a tea party, accompanied discreetly by two of Adrian’s most trusted security operatives driving a sleek black SUV. The bakery was warm, filled with the rich, comforting scent of cinnamon and vanilla. Lily was happily pointing at a chocolate cupcake behind the glass display case when the ambient noise of the street outside was pierced by a sharp, aggressive screech of tires. Outside, a battered gray sedan had slammed to a halt directly behind the security vehicle, blocking it in. Before the guards could react, the passenger door flew open, and a burly, scarred enforcer wearing a heavy leather jacket leaped out, marching straight toward the bakery entrance. Claire’s maternal instincts flared instantly. She scooped Lily up into her arms, pressing the little girl’s face against her shoulder so she couldn't see the approaching threat. “Stay behind me, sweetie,” Claire whispered, her voice tight with terror as the heavy glass door of the bakery chimed open. The enforcer didn't look at the patrons or pull a weapon; instead, he walked straight up to Claire, shoved a heavy, sealed manila envelope onto the counter, and leaned in close enough for Claire to smell stale cigarette smoke and cheap whiskey. “Tell Adrian Mercer that Viktor Vance sends his regards,” the man rasped in a low, gravelly voice. “Tell him if he wants to see his nanny and his daughter walk out of this city alive, he’ll sign over the South Boston dock deeds by midnight tomorrow. No cops. No lawyers.” Before Claire could muster a single word of defiance, the man spun around, bolted back out to the waiting sedan, and screeched away down the crowded street just as Adrian’s guards rushed inside with drawn weapons and panicked expressions. Claire’s hands shook violently as she clutched the trembling child in her arms, realizing with horrifying clarity that the underworld shadow had finally reached out to swallow her whole.
