Chapter 13 - The Unspoken Truth

That evening, after Lily had drifted off to sleep without a single trace of fear or hesitation, Claire found herself standing out on the rear veranda, looking out over the snow-covered gardens under a breathtaking canopy of winter stars. The crisp air stung her cheeks, but she didn't care; the sheer freedom of breathing unburdened air felt miraculous. Soft footsteps approached behind her, and a heavy cashmere coat was draped gently over her shoulders. She didn’t need to turn around to know who it was. Adrian stepped up beside her, resting his forearms against the stone balustrade, looking out over the estate. “You saved her, you know,” Adrian said quietly, breaking the peaceful silence. “I gave her money, security, doctors, and everything that wealth could buy. But you gave her what she actually needed: a safe harbor and a reason to trust the world again.” Claire turned her face toward him, her heart beating a frantic rhythm. “I just did my job, Adrian.” “No,” he corrected gently, turning to face her fully, his dark eyes shining with intense emotion under the starlight. “You stopped being an employee the moment you held my daughter through the dark. And you stopped being just a nanny the moment you walked into my thoughts and refused to leave.” Claire’s breath hitched. She opened her mouth to speak, to remind him of the vast gulf between their social worlds, but words failed her as Adrian reached out, his warm fingers gently cupping her cheek. The touch sent a cascade of warm electricity straight through her veins, melting away the last remnants of her guarded defenses.
