Chapter 12 - The Return to Light

By Wednesday afternoon, the news had swept across Boston: Mercer Holdings had completely cleansed its corporate registry, several corrupt city officials including Marcus Cole had been indicted on sweeping federal corruption charges, and the notorious Viktor Vance syndicate had been permanently dismantled. Inside the grand mansion, the heavy, suffocating cloud of tension that had hung over the estate for days had completely evaporated. Sunlight poured unobstructed through the massive glass windows, illuminating the polished marble floors and the white floral arrangements adorning the foyer. Lily skipped down the grand staircase in her favorite glittery sneakers—the first time she had worn them since her mother’s passing—holding a homemade crayon drawing of a fox, a little girl, and a tall man standing together under a bright yellow sun. She ran straight into the kitchen where Claire was helping Mrs. Gable prep afternoon tea, thrusting the paper triumphantly into Claire’s hands. “Look, Claire! It’s us! And the stars aren't hidden anymore because the clouds went away!” Lily declared with a bright, infectious giggle. Claire knelt down, hugging the little girl tightly as tears of profound happiness welled in her eyes. Just as she stood up, she noticed Adrian standing in the doorway, watching them with an expression of such tender, undisguised devotion that her breath caught in her throat. He had shaved away the tired stubble, dressed in a sharp dark suit, and for the first time since she had met him, there was no shadow of the underworld lingering in his posture. He looked simply like a man who had finally found his way back home.
