Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Mansion

The staff quarters on the ground floor of the Mercer mansion were luxurious by any normal standard, featuring a spacious single bedroom, a private en-suite bathroom, and a large window overlooking the snow-draped formal gardens. Yet, as Claire finally closed her door behind her that morning, the room felt suffocatingly quiet. True to Adrian’s strict command, she had stripped off her rumpled cardigan, washed her face in cold water, and collapsed onto the mattress, expecting sleep to claim her instantly. Instead, her mind raced in erratic circles. She replayed every second of that surreal dawn encounter in the nursery—the way Adrian’s hand had felt over her wrist, the profound vulnerability hidden beneath his intimidating mafia-boss aura, and the terrifying realization that she was no longer just a paid employee keeping a schedule. She was emotionally tethered to this broken family. Around noon, a soft knock rattled her door. Expecting a housekeeper with a tray or perhaps a message from the kitchen, Claire pulled on a thick wool sweater and turned the handle. Standing in the hallway was Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper who had ruled the Mercer estate with an iron fist for over thirty years. Mrs. Gable’s stern face softened just a fraction as she looked at Claire, holding a steaming mug of black coffee and a small plate of toast. “Mr. Mercer gave strict instructions that you are not to be disturbed until evening,” Mrs. Gable said, her tone brisk but surprisingly kind as she handed over the breakfast tray. “He also informed the entire kitchen staff that if anyone wakes you, they answer directly to him.” Claire took the mug, her cheeks warming slightly. “Thank you, Mrs. Gable. How is... how is Lily?” “She woke up around ten asking for you,” the housekeeper replied, a faint, knowing smile touching the corners of her lips. “Mr. Mercer told her you were resting because you worked hard to take care of her. Do you know what the little angel did then? She asked her father to bring her down a picture book so she could read it by herself while he handled his morning calls in the study. First time in a year she hasn't clung to his arm crying for a nanny.” Claire stared into the dark coffee, a profound sense of warmth washing over her fatigue. But that fleeting peace was abruptly shattered as Mrs. Gable leaned in closer, dropping her voice to a cautious whisper. “Be careful, child. Working in this house is not like working for ordinary people. Mr. Mercer protects his own fiercely, but that protection draws dangerous attention. There are men in Boston who still want revenge for things that happened twenty years ago on the shipping docks. Now that Adrian sees you as vital to Lily, you’ve just painted a massive target on your back.” The warning hung in the air like a cold draft, reminding Claire that beneath the shimmering chandeliers, the classical art, and the billionaire lifestyle, the Mercer name was still steeped in blood, shadows, and relentless underworld vendettas.
