Chapter 6 - The Midnight Stroll

By Friday evening, Claire had returned to her regular duties, though the dynamic inside the Mercer mansion had fundamentally altered. When she walked into the grand salon to relieve the evening guard, Adrian was sitting by the grand piano, quietly helping Lily practice drawing with colored pencils. He looked up as Claire entered, their eyes meeting across the polished marble floor. There was an unspoken understanding passing between them—a silent acknowledgment of the night they had shared in the nursery. Lily squealed with delight upon seeing Claire, abandoning her pencils and running across the room to wrap her small arms tightly around Claire’s waist. “Claire! Daddy let me stay up late because I ate all my broccoli!” Lily announced proudly, looking up with wide, bright eyes. Claire smiled, kneeling down to adjust the little girl’s pink cardigan. “Is that so? Well, a big girl who eats her vegetables deserves a special reward. How about a bedtime story about the brave winter fox finding his way back home?” Lily clapped her hands enthusiastically. “Yes! The one with the hidden stars!” As Claire led Lily upstairs toward the nursery, she felt a heavy gaze lingering on her back. Turning her head slightly, she caught Adrian watching them ascend the grand staircase, his expression an unreadable mix of profound gratitude and fierce, possessive protection. Later that night, after Lily had fallen asleep peacefully without a single tear or nightmare, Claire walked down to the ground-floor conservatory to get some fresh air. The glass walls offered a breathtaking view of the moonlit snow-covered lawns and the dark, looming iron gates of the estate perimeter. Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path outside the glass, and a moment later, the sliding door opened to reveal Adrian standing there in a dark wool overcoat, snowflakes clinging to the shoulders of his dark hair. “You should be sleeping, Ms. Bennett,” Adrian said quietly, closing the door behind him to lock out the freezing wind. “I could say the exact same thing to you, Mr. Mercer,” Claire replied, holding her ground with a surprising spark of playful defiance that caught him off guard. A rare, genuine smile touched the corners of Adrian’s lips, softening the harsh lines of his face and making him look startlingly handsome. “Call me Adrian,” he murmured, stepping closer until the warmth of his presence chased away the chill of the glass room. “Only when we’re off duty,” Claire whispered back, her heart performing a dangerous, traitorous flutter against her ribs as she realized just how close the most feared man in Boston was standing to her.
