Chapter 5 - THE POISONED OLIVE BRANCH

Two weeks after the wedding, Josie appeared at our door looking hollowed out. She had spent the intervening days cutting off all contact with our mother, realizing at last that her desire for a maternal figure had been weaponized against us. We welcomed her in, letting her crash on our couch while she processed the betrayal. But my mother was not one to let a pawn slip away easily.

Three days later, a high-end courier delivered a massive floral arrangement to our apartment. Nestled inside the expensive white orchids was a handwritten card penned in my mother’s immaculate cursive: To my dearest daughters, can we sit down and break bread? Let’s leave the past where it belongs. Dinner this Friday at my house.

Josie stared at the card in horror. “She’s testing us. She thinks we’re weak.”

I stared at the delicate petals, feeling a cold calculation settle over my thoughts. She wanted a confrontation on her own turf, surrounded by her memories and her rules. But she didn't realize that I wasn't the terrified teenager cowering on the stairs anymore. I was a grown woman with a security network, a supportive husband, and a burning desire for complete, unvarnished justice. I looked at Wells and Josie, nodded slowly, and said, “We’re going to dinner.”
