Chapter 4 - BREACH OF SECURITY

The photograph beneath the mat changed everything. It was no longer just emotional harassment or psychological warfare; it was physical stalking, trespassing, and targeted surveillance. We took the evidence straight to the local police precinct, laying out the hotel photo, the annotated hospital record, and the hallway camera footage.

To our utter dismay, the desk sergeant glanced over the papers and sighed. “Look, ma’am, this is a civil family dispute. She’s your mother. Until there’s a direct threat of physical violence or an actual break-in, our hands are tied.” I felt a familiar, bitter rage rise in my chest—the exact same helplessness I had felt as a fourteen-year-old child when doctors believed my mother’s polished lies instead of my bruises. The system was designed to protect the abuser behind a veneer of maternal respectability.

Realizing the police would offer no immediate shelter, Wells and I took matters into our own hands. That afternoon, we hired a private cybersecurity and residential defense firm. Within forty-eight hours, our apartment was retrofitted with industrial-grade smart locks, motion-activated external cameras with cloud backup, and encrypted audio-recording devices. We weren't just locking doors anymore; we were building an airtight electronic fortress. If the police needed proof of a criminal threat, we would manufacture it ourselves by giving my mother enough rope to hang her own case.
