Chapter 12 - CRIMINAL INDICTMENT

The grand jury handed down a formal four-count criminal indictment: felony domestic battery, assault with intent to do bodily harm, stalking, and witness intimidation. Refused bail due to her status as a severe flight risk and clear danger to the victims, my mother was remanded to the county detention center to await trial.
The reality of prison life hit her hard. Stripped of her designer suits, her makeup, and her controlled environment, she was forced to confront the insignificance of her ego. Her lawyers tried to negotiate a plea deal for a reduced sentence in exchange for a guilty plea, but the District Attorney—backed firmly by Josie and me—rejected every single proposal. There would be no secret deals, no swept-under-the-rug compromises. She wanted a public story? She was going to get a public verdict.
