Chapter 13 - THE TRIAL OF SECRETS

The courtroom was packed to capacity on the first day of the trial. Journalists, curious locals, and extended family members filled the gallery, whispering as my mother was escorted to the defense table in a standard orange inmate jumpsuit. When she looked up and caught my eye, the old, venomous spark flashed in her gaze, but it quickly died down when she saw Wells and Josie sitting firmly on either side of me, holding my hands.

The prosecution methodically laid out the evidence. The highlight of the trial was the playback of the dining room audio and video surveillance. As the courtroom listened to the sound of my mother choking me while confessing to the staircase push from my childhood, an absolute, suffocating silence settled over the room. Several jurors wiped away tears. Even my mother lowered her head, realizing that her voice—the very instrument she had used to control us for decades—had become the final witness for the prosecution.
