Chapter 8 - The Gala Entrance

|

The Grand Meridian Hotel was a fortress of glass and steel in downtown Chicago. Tonight, it was crawling with armed men disguised as valets and security guards. The annual Syndicate Gala was the one night a year when the city's rival families, corrupt politicians, and powerful businessmen gathered under a temporary flag of truce.

The armored SUV pulled up to the red carpet. Carmine opened the door, his eyes scanning the crowd with lethal intensity.

Daniel stepped out first, adjusting his cuffs. He turned and offered his hand to Norah.

She took a deep breath, clutching her black cast against her stomach, and stepped out of the vehicle. The flashing bulbs of the paparazzi blinded her instantly, but Daniel’s grip on her hand was an iron anchor. He pulled her close to his side, his arm wrapping securely around her waist.

"Smile," Daniel whispered against her ear, his breath warm against her skin. "Show them you own the world."

Norah forced a confident, slightly arrogant smile onto her face. They walked up the red carpet, ignoring the shouted questions from the press.

When the heavy brass doors of the ballroom swung open, the loud, booming chatter of the gala died almost instantly.

Three hundred pairs of eyes turned to look at the entrance. They stared at the bruising on Daniel's jaw, proof of the assassination attempt that was supposed to have killed him. And then, they stared at the unknown, stunning woman standing confidently by his side, wearing a diamond the size of a grape.

Whispers erupted like a tidal wave across the room.

Daniel led her down the grand staircase, moving with absolute, terrifying authority. He didn't acknowledge the stares. He walked directly toward the center of the room, parting the sea of wealthy criminals effortlessly.

They approached a large circular table where an older man with silver hair and a sharp, cruel face was sitting. He was flanked by four massive bodyguards.

"Don Falcone," Daniel greeted smoothly, his voice carrying just loud enough for the surrounding tables to hear.

The old man looked up, his eyes narrowing into venomous slits. "Daniel. I heard you had a nasty fall yesterday. Your face looks terrible."

"Just a minor scuffle," Daniel smiled, a dark, dangerous expression. "I always get back up. But I didn't come to discuss my health. I came to introduce my fiancé."

Daniel pulled Norah slightly forward.

Falcone's eyes dragged over Norah, assessing her worth in a fraction of a second. "A fiancé? This is sudden. I wasn't aware the Russo family was forming new alliances."

"There are many things you aren't aware of, Dominic," Daniel said coldly. "Norah comes from a very powerful family on the East Coast. We are combining our assets. My reach has just expanded."

Falcone's jaw tightened. The bluff was working. The old boss was calculating the threat of a new, unknown power structure.

"Well," Falcone sneered, raising his champagne glass. "Congratulations. Let's hope she has a long, healthy life."

"She will," Daniel promised, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "Because anyone who looks at her wrong won't live to see morning."
