Chapter 13 - The Inside Job

The kiss broke only when they both needed air. Norah rested her forehead against his chest, her heart racing, listening to the heavy, steady thud of his pulse. It felt dangerously real.
Before either of them could speak, the secure intercom on the wall buzzed loudly, shattering the quiet intimacy of the bunker.
"Boss," Carmine’s voice crackled through the speaker, sounding breathless and urgent. "We have a massive problem."
Daniel’s demeanor changed instantly. The vulnerable man vanished, replaced by the apex predator. He stood up, grabbing the intercom receiver.
"Report," Daniel commanded.
"It's the security feeds," Carmine said. "They just went dark. All of them. The perimeter alarms are disabled."
Daniel’s blood ran cold. "That's impossible unless someone physically cut the hardline from the server room inside the house."
"I know," Carmine said grimly. "We have a rat, Boss. And I think the Falcones are already inside the gates."
Daniel dropped the receiver. He turned to Norah, his eyes wide with sudden, terrifying clarity.
"Isabella," Daniel whispered. "She knew exactly how to breach the estate because she had someone on the inside feeding her the security layouts."
He grabbed his tactical vest and shoved his spare magazines into the pockets. He pulled a heavy handgun from his holster and checked the chamber.
"Lock the steel door behind me," Daniel ordered Norah, his voice leaving no room for argument. "Do not open it for anyone but me. Not even Carmine. Do you understand?"
"Daniel, no," Norah panicked, grabbing his arm. "They're coming for you! Don't go out there alone!"
"I have to hold them off in the main halls," Daniel said fiercely, pulling her close for one brief, desperate kiss. "If they get down here, we both die."
He stepped out of the bunker, and the heavy steel door slammed shut behind him. The deadbolts engaged automatically, locking Norah inside a secure, silent tomb.
She backed away from the door, her breathing shallow and ragged. She was trapped in the basement again, but this time, there was no safety on the other side of the door.
Ten minutes passed in agonizing silence. The thick steel walls completely muffled the sounds of the battle raging upstairs.
Then, she heard a sound that made her blood freeze.
The electronic keypad on the outside of the bunker door began to beep. Someone was entering the override code.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
Norah backed away, grabbing a heavy iron fire poker from the decorative fireplace in the bunker's living room. She gripped it tightly with her good hand, raising it like a baseball bat.
The heavy steel bolts scraped back. The door slowly groaned open.

Standing in the doorway, holding a suppressed pistol, was not a Falcone hitman.
It was Carmine.
