Chapter 12 - The Bunker

|
The Russo estate was transformed into a military fortress overnight. The elegant iron gates were reinforced, floodlights illuminated every inch of the perimeter, and heavily armed guards patrolled the grounds with dogs.
For her own safety, Norah was moved from the luxurious guest suite into the secure bunker beneath the mansion. It was a massive, subterranean apartment designed for exactly this kind of crisis, complete with a living room, a kitchen, and a communications hub.
For three days, she didn't see the sun. She watched the news on the flat-screen TV. The city was in chaos. Mysterious fires burned down Falcone-owned warehouses. Top Falcone lieutenants were found dead in their cars. Daniel was systematically dismantling his enemy's empire with brutal, surgical precision.
On the fourth night, the heavy steel door of the bunker clicked open.
Daniel walked in. He looked completely drained. His tuxedo had been replaced by dark tactical gear. The swelling on his jaw had faded into a dull, yellowish bruise, but there was a new cut on his forehead, bleeding sluggishly.
He didn't speak. He walked directly to the leather sofa, unbuckled his tactical vest, and dropped it onto the floor with a heavy thud. He collapsed onto the couch, resting his head back and closing his eyes.
Norah immediately went to the small bathroom and retrieved a damp cloth and a first aid kit.
She walked over and sat gently beside him. She reached out, carefully dabbing the blood from the cut on his forehead.
Daniel didn't flinch. He opened his eyes, looking at her with a profound, terrifying vulnerability.
"You're bleeding," she murmured, focusing entirely on the cut to avoid his intense gaze.
"It's a scratch," Daniel breathed out, his voice rough. "Falcone's men ambushed us at the docks. We lost three men."
Norah stopped cleaning the wound. The reality of his violent world crashed over her. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be," Daniel said, reaching up to gently wrap his large hand around her wrist. "This is the life I chose. This is the life I inherited. It's ugly, and it's bloody, and it never ends."
He looked at her, his dark eyes searching her face.
"But you don't belong in it, Norah," Daniel whispered, a heavy sadness creeping into his tone. "I brought you into this mess to save myself. It was selfish. I'm sorry."
Norah stared at him, her heart skipping a beat. The most dangerous man in the city was apologizing to his maid.
"You saved my family from debt," Norah replied softly, pulling her hand away from his grasp to gently touch his unbruised cheek. "We made a deal. I knew what I was getting into."
"You couldn't possibly have known," Daniel argued gently, leaning into her touch.

The air in the bunker suddenly grew thick, heavy with an electric, undeniable tension. The line between boss and fake fiancé had blurred completely in the darkness of the underground room.
Daniel leaned forward. He didn't ask permission, and she didn't pull away. He kissed her, softly at first, then with a desperate, consuming hunger that tasted of smoke, blood, and salvation.
