Chapter 14 - The Traitor

|

Carmine stepped into the bunker, his eyes sweeping the room until they landed on Norah. He smiled, a cold, empty expression that made her stomach drop.

"Hello, Norah," Carmine said casually, stepping inside and locking the heavy steel door behind him. "Daniel told you not to open the door for anyone. Fortunately for me, I installed the security system. I have the master override codes."

Norah gripped the fire poker tighter, her knuckles turning white. "You're the rat. You let them in."

"I didn't let them in, sweetheart," Carmine chuckled, raising his gun, aiming it directly at her chest. "I sold them the blueprints. The Falcones offered me a very lucrative position in their new regime once Daniel is out of the picture. I'm a businessman. It was simple economics."

"Daniel trusted you," Norah spat, disgusted by the betrayal.

"Daniel is soft," Carmine sneered, taking a slow step toward her. "He started a war over a maid. He brought you into our world and made us all targets. My loyalty ended when he put your life above the Syndicate."

"Where is he?" Norah demanded, her voice shaking but her stance firm.

"He's currently bleeding out in the grand foyer," Carmine smiled maliciously. "The Falcone hit squad ambushed him on the stairs. He fought well, but there were too many of them. Now, it's just you and me."

Norah's heart shattered. Daniel is dead. The thought threatened to completely paralyze her, but a deep, primal survival instinct roared to life in her chest. She wasn't going to die in a basement. Not again.

"Drop the poker, Norah," Carmine ordered, his voice hardening. "Make this easy, and I'll make it quick."

Norah didn't drop the poker. She looked around the bunker, calculating the distance between them.

"You think you're going to get away with this?" she asked, stalling for time.

"I already have," Carmine laughed.

He raised the gun, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Norah didn't hesitate. She threw the heavy iron poker directly at Carmine's face with all her remaining strength.

Carmine ducked instinctively, raising his arms to shield his face. The poker smashed into his shoulder, throwing his aim off. The suppressed gun fired wildly, the bullet ricocheting off the steel wall behind Norah.

She didn't wait for him to recover. She lunged forward, using her broken, cast-covered right arm as a battering ram, smashing it brutally into Carmine's jaw.

The heavy fiberglass cast connected with a sickening crunch. Carmine stumbled backward, stunned, dropping the gun.

Norah scrambled for the weapon, but Carmine was faster. He grabbed her by the hair and threw her violently across the room. She hit the floor hard, groaning in pain.

Carmine picked up the gun, his face red with murderous fury, blood pouring from his broken nose.

"You stupid bitch," Carmine snarled, aiming the gun directly at her head. "Game over."

Before he could pull the trigger, the steel door of the bunker exploded open.
