Chapter 6 - The Deal

|

"I can't die," Norah blurted out, panic rising in her throat. "I have seventy thousand dollars in medical debt from my mother. If I die, they'll go after my younger sister for it. She's only in college, she can't handle that."

Daniel tilted his head, studying her with a newfound, sharp interest. The desperation in her voice wasn't for her own life, but for her family. It was a loyalty he recognized, one that resonated deeply within his own violent world.

"Seventy thousand," Daniel repeated softly, as if rolling the number around in his mind. He pulled out a sleek, black smartphone and tapped the screen a few times.

"What are you doing?" Norah asked, holding her broken hand tightly against her stomach.

Daniel didn't answer immediately. He typed a quick message and hit send. He placed the phone back on the metal table.

"Your debt is paid," Daniel announced flatly.

Norah blinked, her mind struggling to process the words. "What?"

"The seventy thousand dollars," Daniel clarified, leaning forward. "My accountants have just wired the full amount to the hospital billing department under a shell corporation. Your mother's account is clear. Your sister is safe."

Norah stared at him, utterly dumbfounded. A weight that had been crushing her chest for six months vanished in an instant. She opened her mouth to thank him, to cry, but Daniel raised a hand to stop her.

"Do not thank me," Daniel warned, his eyes turning cold and calculating. "That was not a gift. That was a transaction. You saved my life, and I cleared your debt. We are even."

"Okay," Norah whispered, feeling the trap closing around her. "So... what happens now?"

"Now," Daniel said, standing up and towering over the table, "I offer you a job."

Norah frowned. "I already have a job. I clean your foyer."

"You are fired from cleaning my foyer," Daniel said smoothly. "Because starting tomorrow, the entire city of Chicago is going to believe that you are my fiancé."

The silence in the interrogation room was so absolute Norah could hear the blood rushing in her ears.

"Your... what?" she stammered, thinking he was mocking her.

"The Falcone family wants me dead," Daniel explained, pacing the small room. "They think I am isolated. They think I have no strong alliances. If I suddenly announce my engagement, they will assume I have forged a powerful new alliance. It will make them hesitate. It will buy me the time I need to hunt them down and slaughter them."

"But I'm a maid!" Norah argued desperately. "I wear a gray uniform! No one will believe I'm some powerful alliance!"

Daniel stopped pacing and looked at her. A dark, terrifying smile touched the corners of his bruised mouth.

"They will believe what I tell them to believe," Daniel said softly. "You will be dressed in designer clothes. You will be given a new background. You will stand by my side at public events, and you will smile. In exchange, I will keep you alive, and I will pay you one hundred thousand dollars when this war is over."

May you like

He walked back to the table and leaned down, his face inches from hers. The scent of expensive cologne and danger washed over her.

"Do we have a deal, Norah?"
