Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN DANIEL UNDERESTIMATED|

Sarah had spent most of her marriage avoiding conflict.

Daniel had always been more confident in public, more persuasive in business meetings, and more comfortable talking over people who disagreed with him.

She had convinced herself that keeping the peace was a form of strength.

Now she understood the difference between peace and silence.

With Evelyn's guidance, she began organizing the evidence into a chronological record. She saved messages, printed financial statements, and created a secure archive of documents relating to the proposed transfers.

She also contacted the company's independent board members through formal channels.

Her request was simple: preserve the records, commission an independent audit, and prevent any transfer involving her name until the disputed authorizations had been examined.

Daniel responded within an hour.

He called her repeatedly, then sent a series of increasingly hostile messages.

You have no idea what you're doing.

You're damaging a company that supports hundreds of employees.

Think about the child before you destroy everything.

Sarah read the final message twice.

Then she replied.

That is exactly what I'm doing.

Daniel showed up at Emily's house that evening.

Emily refused to let him inside until Sarah agreed to speak with him on the porch.

He looked furious.

"You contacted the board."

"I requested an audit."

"You're interfering with my business."

"Then the audit should clear everything up."

He stepped closer.

"You think those people care about you? They'll abandon you the moment the company loses money."

"Maybe. But the records will still exist."

His expression shifted.

"Who have you been talking to?"

Sarah didn't answer.

"Was it Thomas Reed?"

She remained silent.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"I should have known. Your father always thought he was smarter than everyone else."

"Don't bring my father into this."

"He was the reason this family became complicated."

Sarah stared at him.

"My father helped you when your company was struggling. He introduced you to investors. He trusted you."

"And I repaid him."

"By using his daughter?"

Daniel's face hardened.

"You don't understand how business works."

"You're right. I don't understand how a man can laugh while another woman nearly knocks his pregnant wife to the floor."

He looked away.

For a brief moment, Sarah saw something like shame.

Then it vanished.

"You're making this personal."

"It became personal when you used my name without permission."

Daniel took a breath.

"Let's settle this privately. I'll give you whatever you want. Money, a house, full custody arrangements that favor you. Just stop contacting the board."

Sarah's stomach tightened.

"You can't buy your way out of everything."

"Everyone has a price."

"Then you've spent your life surrounded by people who never loved you."

The words struck him harder than she expected.

His face reddened.

"You'll regret this."

Sarah stepped back toward the door.

"Perhaps. But I'll regret it knowing I stood up for myself."

She went inside and locked the door.

Through the window, she watched Daniel sit in his car for several minutes before driving away.

Emily approached quietly.

"Are you okay?"

Sarah nodded.

Then she began to cry.

May you like

Not because she wanted him back.

Because she was finally grieving the man she had believed he could become.
