Chapter 2 - THE BUTTON THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING|

Daniel grabbed Sarah's wrist.
"What did you just do?"
Sarah looked at his hand.
"Let go."
He released her, but his expression remained furious.
"Don't embarrass me in front of these people."
She almost laughed.
"You brought your mistress to a charity gala and watched her kick a pregnant woman's chair. I think we passed embarrassment twenty minutes ago."
A murmur traveled through the ballroom.
Chloe folded her arms.
"You're twisting everything. I barely touched the chair."
"Then you won't mind if we review the security footage," Sarah replied.
Chloe's face changed.
Daniel noticed.
"There's no reason to involve security," he said quickly.
"Why not?"
"Because this is a family matter."
Sarah looked at him for a long moment.
"Since when have you treated me like family?"
Before Daniel could answer, the hotel's security director approached with two employees.
"Mrs. Bennett, are you injured?"
"No. But I would like the incident documented, and I'd like the footage preserved."
"Of course."
Daniel stepped forward.
"I'm the principal sponsor tonight. We can handle this privately."
The security director remained polite.
"Sir, Mrs. Bennett has requested an incident report. We'll follow the hotel's procedures."
"I own the company paying for this event."
"And I manage the hotel's security," the director replied. "Please allow us to do our jobs."
For the first time that evening, Daniel looked uncertain.
Sarah watched the exchange without speaking.
She had learned something important during six years of marriage: Daniel could tolerate almost anything as long as he believed he controlled the outcome.
What he could not tolerate was a situation in which other people followed rules he couldn't rewrite.
A woman from the event's medical team approached and asked Sarah to sit while she checked her blood pressure. Sarah agreed, explaining that the sudden movement had frightened her and that she wanted to make sure the baby was okay.
Daniel paced nearby.
"Sarah, come on. We don't need to turn this into a circus."
She looked at him.
"You called me here because you wanted people to see your perfect marriage. You can stay and watch what happens when they see the truth."
His jaw tightened.
Chloe leaned toward him.
"She's bluffing. She's always been dramatic."
Sarah heard her.
She also saw a young photographer standing near the ballroom entrance, his camera lowered but still recording.
"Excuse me," Sarah said to the security director. "Please make sure any footage of the incident is retained according to the hotel's normal policy."
"Certainly."
Daniel turned sharply.
"You can't do this to me."
Sarah's expression remained calm.
"I'm not doing anything to you. I'm asking people to document what happened."
Her phone vibrated.
A message appeared from her attorney, Evelyn Brooks.
The preliminary financial review is complete. Do not sign anything Daniel gives you. We need to speak tonight.
Sarah read it once and locked her phone.
Daniel saw the change in her expression.
"What is that?"
"Nothing you need to worry about."
He laughed bitterly.
"You think you can threaten me with a phone call?"
"No," Sarah said. "I think you have spent so long believing that money makes you untouchable that you've forgotten other people can make decisions, too."
She stood carefully.
The medical team confirmed that she should contact her obstetrician for a follow-up assessment, and she arranged transportation to the hospital.
Daniel reached for her elbow.
"You're not leaving like this."
Sarah gently moved away.
"Watch me."
As she walked toward the exit, the guests parted to let her pass.
Behind her, Chloe whispered urgently to Daniel.
"What did she mean about the financial review?"
For the first time, Daniel had no answer.

He was beginning to realize that his wife had not pressed the emergency button because she was afraid of him.
She had pressed it because she was finished being afraid.
