Chapter 19 - THE FINAL BETRAYAL|

Robert Ellis's closest friend had been named Peter Lawson.

He had attended Sarah's wedding, delivered a speech about loyalty, and helped manage Robert's affairs after his death.

Sarah had trusted him.

Now investigators discovered that Peter had been a director of the company used to conceal several of the disputed payments. He had also signed documents authorizing the transfer of assets from Robert's consulting business.

When confronted, Peter claimed he had acted under instructions from Charles Bennett.

He insisted that Robert had agreed to help establish the holding companies and had later regretted the arrangement.

Sarah refused to accept the explanation without evidence.

Evelyn obtained copies of the original correspondence, and an independent forensic review revealed that several pages had been inserted into the estate records after Robert's death.

Peter had used his access to alter the file.

He had also arranged for the second ledger to be held in Sarah's trust, believing he could eventually persuade her to transfer control.

When that failed, he had supported Charles's plan to undermine her credibility.

The investigation now involved multiple agencies and several years of financial records. The authorities warned Sarah that the process would be lengthy, and Evelyn reminded her that not every allegation would necessarily result in a conviction.

Still, the evidence was substantial.

Daniel resigned from his executive position and agreed to cooperate with the independent review. He also provided records showing that Charles had continued directing company decisions after his supposed death.

Chloe gave a detailed statement.

Michael identified additional accounts.

And Peter's own emails contradicted his claim that Robert had knowingly participated in the scheme.

At a preliminary hearing, the judge ordered several disputed assets preserved while the investigators continued tracing the funds.

Sarah attended with Emily.

She sat quietly as lawyers discussed documents that had once seemed incomprehensible. She had no desire to humiliate anyone in return.

She wanted the truth established, the money accounted for, and her child's future protected.

After the hearing, Daniel approached her outside the courthouse.

"I know this doesn't fix anything," he said, "but I'm sorry."

Sarah looked at him.

"I believe you are sorry."

He swallowed.

"Do you think we could ever be friends?"

She considered the question.

"Maybe one day, when the truth no longer requires us to stand on opposite sides of it."

He nodded.

"I understand."

She turned toward Emily.

Then Daniel called after her.

"Sarah, there's something else. My father left a letter for you. The investigators found it in his private office."

He handed her a sealed envelope.

Sarah didn't open it until she was home.

The letter contained a confession that Charles had concealed assets and manipulated company records.

But its final paragraph was addressed specifically to her.

You believe you have won because you found the ledger. You have not. The ledger was never the most valuable thing your father left behind.

Beneath the sentence was a photograph of a hospital room.

Sarah recognized the date.

It was the night her father had died.

Someone had been standing outside his room.

Someone the hospital records said had never visited.

May you like

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten name.

Daniel Bennett.
