Chapter 3 - THE WIFE HE THOUGHT WAS TOO WEAK TO LEAVE|

Sarah did not go home that night.

She went directly to the hospital, where her obstetrician examined her and confirmed that she and the baby appeared stable. The doctor instructed her to return immediately if she experienced concerning symptoms and reminded her that stress and physical jolts should never be dismissed during pregnancy.

By midnight, Sarah was sitting in a quiet consultation room, wrapped in a blanket, listening to Evelyn Brooks explain the documents she had received earlier that week.

Evelyn was not merely Sarah's divorce attorney.

She was the lawyer Sarah's late father had trusted to manage a private investment account established before Sarah married Daniel.

"Your father anticipated that you might eventually need independent resources," Evelyn explained. "He placed the assets in a trust that remained separate from your marital property, subject to the terms of the agreement."

Sarah looked down at the folder.

"I never wanted to use it."

"I know. But your husband has been moving money out of several companies connected to your household finances."

"How much?"

"We're still tracing the transfers."

Sarah closed her eyes.

For months, Daniel had claimed that business was difficult, that the company needed temporary restructuring, and that their household budget had to be tightened.

He had canceled their planned nursery renovation and complained about the cost of prenatal appointments.

Meanwhile, Chloe had appeared wearing jewelry that Sarah knew Daniel had supposedly been unable to afford.

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" Sarah asked.

"Because the documents were incomplete, and I didn't want to make accusations without evidence. But three days ago, an accountant contacted me. He believes your husband has been preparing to transfer certain assets into a company controlled by someone else."

"Chloe?"

"Possibly. We need proof."

Sarah looked through the papers.

One transfer had been authorized using a digital signature linked to her name.

She had never approved it.

"Daniel forged my authorization."

"We haven't established that conclusively," Evelyn said. "But the records are suspicious enough that we should preserve everything."

Sarah thought about the empty seat beside her at the gala.

She remembered Daniel laughing while Chloe kicked her chair.

For the first time, she understood that the cruelty wasn't simply personal.

He had expected her to remain quiet because he believed she had nowhere else to go.

"What's my next move?" she asked.

"Don't confront him about the finances yet. Preserve your communications, don't sign new documents, and let us verify the transfers. You should also stay somewhere you feel safe."

Sarah called her older sister, Emily, who offered her guest room immediately.

Before dawn, Sarah arrived at Emily's house with a small suitcase, her prenatal records, and the pearl brooch she'd worn to the gala.

She placed the brooch on the bedside table.

Then she opened her laptop.

For the first time in years, she began documenting every unexplained transaction, every contradictory statement, and every occasion when Daniel had pressured her to sign something without reading it.

At 7:12 a.m., her phone rang.

Daniel's name appeared.

She answered.

"Where are you?" he demanded.

"Somewhere safe."

"You can't just disappear."

"I didn't disappear. I left."

His voice hardened.

"Come home. We need to talk about last night."

Sarah looked at the growing list of documents on her screen.

"No, Daniel. We need to talk about the money."

Silence.

Then he said something that confirmed her suspicions.

"What money?"

Sarah ended the call.

She had not told him which transactions she had discovered.

And he had already revealed that he knew exactly what she meant.
