Chapter 18 - THE SON NOBODY KNEW EXISTED|

Charles Bennett had two sons.
Daniel had always believed he was an only child.
The newly discovered man, Michael Bennett, had been born during Charles's first marriage and had been raised under a different surname after his parents separated.
Michael had worked for several of Charles's companies, but his existence had been kept out of the family's public history.
According to the investigators, he had helped manage the private holding companies and had access to the financial systems used in the disputed transfers.
He was also the man seen escorting Chloe through the hotel corridor.
Sarah felt sick when she learned that Chloe had been taken to a remote property and questioned about the ledger. Michael had not physically harmed her, according to her initial statement, but he had threatened to make her disappear if she refused to cooperate.
The police had located the property after tracing a vehicle connected to Richard Hale.
Michael was arrested.
Chloe agreed to provide a full statement.
Sarah visited her at the hospital with Evelyn's approval.
Chloe looked exhausted.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
Sarah pulled a chair beside the bed.
"I believe you regret what happened."
"I do."
"But I need you to understand something. I'm not going to pretend the gala never happened."
"I know."
Chloe looked toward the window.
"Michael told me that Daniel was never supposed to inherit the company permanently. Charles wanted him to serve as the public face while the real assets remained under private control."
Sarah listened.
"Why involve me?"
"Because your father created a trust that could expose the entire structure. Michael believed that if you transferred the trust into a company he controlled, the beneficiary list would become harder to challenge."
"And the gala?"
Chloe closed her eyes.
"Charles wanted you to react publicly. He believed that if you appeared unstable or aggressive, people would question your credibility when the financial records came out."
Sarah felt the truth settle into place.
The chair had been kicked.
The glass had shattered.
Daniel had laughed.
And Charles had watched from a private room, hoping the scene would create a convenient narrative about a troubled wife.
"What happens now?" Chloe asked.
"The investigators will decide what evidence supports the charges. You'll have to answer for your own actions, too."
Chloe nodded.
"I understand."
Sarah stood.
Before leaving, she paused.
"You don't have to become a better person overnight. But you do have to stop making other women pay for your choices."
Chloe's eyes filled with tears.
"I will."
Outside the room, Evelyn was waiting with an update.
Michael had agreed to provide information about the financial network in exchange for consideration from prosecutors. His attorney had confirmed that he possessed communications implicating Charles and several executives.
But the investigation had uncovered a new complication.
The company that received the disputed payments through Evelyn's supposed business registration had been established using documents signed after Robert Ellis's death.
Someone had forged not only Sarah's signature but also Evelyn's identity.
And that person had access to the original estate records.
Sarah looked at Evelyn.
"Who could have known enough to do that?"
Evelyn's face tightened.
"Someone who had access to your father's files."
Then she said a name.
May you like
A name Sarah had not heard in years.
Her father's closest friend.
