Chapter 17 - THE PEARL BROOCH|

Sarah placed the pearl brooch on Evelyn's desk.
The number engraved beneath the clasp matched the number on the brass key from her father's storage locker.
Evelyn examined the piece carefully.
"This could be a reference to the original trust, but we shouldn't assume it contains anything. Let's have a specialist inspect it."
The specialist confirmed that the brooch had been modified years earlier. A tiny compartment had been fitted behind the decorative backing, but it was sealed so neatly that it could not be opened without damaging the piece.
Sarah agreed to let the specialist remove the backing under documented conditions.
Inside was a folded strip of paper and a miniature key.
The paper contained a message from Robert.
Sarah, if you have reached this point, the situation is more dangerous than I hoped it would become. The second ledger is held in a trust that can only be accessed by you. Do not allow anyone to pressure you into signing a transfer. The trust exists to protect the records, not to give anyone control over your life.
Beneath the note was the name of a private records institution.
The miniature key was marked with the institution's identifying code.
Evelyn contacted the institution and verified that a sealed deposit had been registered in Sarah's name several years earlier. The deposit could be released only after identity verification and confirmation of her legal authority as trustee.
The appointment was scheduled for the following morning.
Sarah spent the night at Emily's house, barely sleeping.
She thought about her father, who had apparently anticipated a future she could never have imagined. She thought about Daniel, who had chosen secrecy over honesty. And she thought about Chloe, who remained missing because someone believed the ledger was worth more than a human life.
At the records institution, Sarah completed the verification process and signed the required acknowledgment.
A staff member brought out a sealed case.
Inside was the original beneficiary list, accompanied by a notarized declaration explaining the trust's purpose and the chain of custody.
The records identified payments to several executives, intermediaries, and companies associated with the disputed transfers.
Charles Bennett's name appeared repeatedly.
So did Richard Hale's.
But the final page revealed something unexpected.
A separate payment had been made to a company owned by a person Sarah had trusted for years.
Her former family attorney.
Evelyn read the entry twice.
"I never knew about this company."
Sarah looked at her.
"Could someone have used your name?"
"Possibly. We'll need to verify the registration and authorization."
The discovery complicated everything.
If the payment was legitimate, Evelyn might have been connected to the original scheme. If her identity had been misused, someone had deliberately planted evidence that could discredit Sarah's legal team.
Before they could investigate further, the institution's director received a call from the authorities.
Chloe had been found.
She was alive and had been taken to a hospital for evaluation.
But she had delivered a message.
The person who had held her wanted to speak directly with Sarah.
And he had identified himself as Charles Bennett's son.
May you like
Not Daniel.
Another son.
