Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO BE BOUGHT|

Daniel requested a meeting with Sarah at a public café.

She agreed only after Evelyn confirmed that there was no legal reason to avoid a conversation, and Emily offered to accompany her.

Daniel arrived early.

He looked thinner, his usual confidence replaced by a strained determination.

"I owe you an apology," he said.

"You owe me several."

He nodded.

"I know."

For once, he didn't interrupt her.

He explained that Charles had controlled the company long after his supposed death, using trusted executives to maintain access to its financial systems. Daniel had discovered fragments of the arrangement but had been afraid to investigate because the company was carrying enormous debt.

Instead of confronting the truth, he had tried to protect his position.

He had lied to Sarah, continued his affair with Chloe, and authorized documents he barely understood.

"I convinced myself that if I could stabilize the business, everything would eventually work out," he said.

Sarah looked at him.

"You didn't stabilize anything. You made sure everyone else would pay for your mistakes."

"I know."

"Do you know what hurt the most?"

He shook his head.

"You made me question my own judgment. Every time I asked a reasonable question, you told me I was emotional. Every time I noticed something wrong, you made me feel foolish for noticing."

Daniel looked down.

"I was ashamed."

"So you humiliated me?"

He had no answer.

Sarah took a slow breath.

"I'm not going back to our marriage."

"I understand."

"No, Daniel. You need to hear me. I am not negotiating my independence for a promise that you'll behave differently next time."

He nodded, eyes wet.

"I won't ask you to."

She studied him for a moment.

"Then why did you want to meet?"

Daniel took an envelope from his coat.

Inside were copies of documents relating to the disputed transfers, along with a statement acknowledging that Sarah had never authorized the signatures appearing on them.

"I've instructed my attorneys to preserve the records and cooperate with the audit," he said. "I'm also stepping aside from the company's daily operations until the investigation is complete."

Sarah read the statement.

It was the first useful thing he had offered her in months.

"Thank you."

Daniel looked surprised.

"You're thanking me?"

"I'm acknowledging that you did the right thing. That doesn't mean I forgive everything else."

He nodded slowly.

For a moment, they sat without speaking.

Then Daniel looked toward the window.

"Do you ever think about what our life would have been like if I'd made different choices?"

Sarah considered the question.

"Sometimes."

"And?"

"I think we might have been happy. But I can't build a life with the man you might have been. I have to protect myself and the child I'm carrying."

Daniel swallowed.

"I hope you find happiness."

"I hope you learn how to stop hurting people when you're afraid."

She stood.

As she walked toward the exit, he called after her.

"Sarah?"

She turned.

"Your father was right about you."

She frowned.

"What did he say?"

Daniel's eyes filled with regret.

"He said you were the kind of person who could forgive a mistake but never confuse forgiveness with permission."

Sarah left without answering.

Outside, she placed a hand over her belly.

The baby moved.

For the first time in weeks, she smiled without forcing herself.

Then Evelyn called.

The investigators had found a second set of financial records.

And those records suggested that Charles Bennett had been preparing for the gala long before Daniel invited Sarah.
