The Man in the Coma / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - Unmasking the TraitorsDown in the federal holding facility in lower Manhattan, the reality of their situation had finally set in.

Veronica sat on the edge of a cold metal cot, her designer silk dress stained and torn, her hair falling in tangled blonde strands around her face. The illusion of the untouchable socialite had vanished completely.

The heavy metal door clanged open, and her defense attorney stepped into the visitation booth, looking exhausted and grim.

“Well?” Veronica demanded, springing to her feet, pressing her manicured hands against the plexiglass partition. “Did the Swiss judge grant the injunction? Can we post bail?”

The attorney shook his head slowly, sliding a stack of legal documents across the stainless steel counter. “It’s over, Veronica. The federal prosecutor has the wire transcripts, the maintenance logs from the Bentley proving the brakes were severed by Paul, and Grace Miller’s signed testimony as an eyewitness to your threats in the hospital room.”

“Grace?” Veronica shrieked, slamming her fist against the glass. “She’s a nobody! A domestic servant! Her word means nothing against mine!”

“Her word is backed by a certified federal cyber-forensic audit and secret service recordings,” the attorney replied coldly, packing up his briefcase. “The district attorney is pushing for twenty-five years without parole on charges of attempted murder and grand larceny. My advice? Start cooperating if you want to avoid maximum security.”

Veronica sank slowly back down onto the metal cot, her hands trembling as she stared at the concrete floor. The countdown she had set for Dominic had expired, but the trap had snapped shut on her instead.
