Chapter 1 - The Countdown Begins

Chapter 1 - The Countdown BeginsThe rhythmic, mechanical beep of the heart monitor was the only anchor keeping Dominic Moretti tethered to the living world. To the elite doctors of Manhattan General, to the cameras flashing outside the hospital gates, and to the woman standing beside his bed, Dominic Moretti was a shattered shell of a man, trapped behind the impenetrable wall of a deep coma. His body was a mosaic of bandages, surgical tape, and intravenous lines, his chest rising and falling to the artificial cadence of a ventilator. But beneath that broken exterior, a razor-sharp intellect was burning with cold, calculated fury.
Veronica Vance leaned over the bed, her breath smelling faintly of expensive champagne and designer perfume. She adjusted the lace of her pristine white bridal gown—a grotesque costume of premature mourning and wedding anticipation rolled into one. Her red lips curled into a predatory smile as she pressed a single finger against her lips, mimicking a gesture of absolute secrecy.
“Die before Friday, Dominic,” she whispered, her voice dropping to a venomous hiss that only the monitors and his ears could catch. “The money moves faster when you stop breathing.”
She believed he was helpless. She believed her secret was safe inside the sterile walls of the VIP suite. She smoothed down her dress, checked her reflection in the window overlooking the glittering Manhattan skyline, and walked out of the room with the practiced grace of a socialite gliding across a ballroom floor.
Yet, she had forgotten one vital element of high-society life: the people you pay to clean your floors are the only ones truly invisible enough to see everything.
Three minutes after Veronica vanished down the corridor, the door clicked open. A soft, familiar rustle of fabric announced Grace Miller, the penthouse maid who had been reassigned to his hospital wing to keep up appearances. Grace walked over to the vase of white lilies sitting on the mahogany side table. Her face was tight with suppressed emotion. She reached out, plucked a dead petal from a stem, and muttered under her breath, “I hate these lilies. They smell like a funeral pretending to be beautiful.”
Grace turned her attention to Dominic’s bed. She reached down to adjust the heavy white blanket, her movements gentle, devoid of the theatrical performance that Veronica had just put on. She didn’t know cameras were rolling, because she didn't care about an audience. She did it because she genuinely thought he was cold.
As her fingers brushed against his knuckles beneath the blanket, she froze.
Dominic’s smallest finger twitched. Just a millimeter. But it was enough.
Grace gasped, her hand flying to her mouth in utter disbelief. She leaned closer, her wide, terrified eyes locking onto his face. Before she could open her mouth to call for the nurses, Dominic's eyelids fluttered open. The hazel irises, usually flashing with the authority that controlled half of New York's real estate and shipping lanes, were now blazing with a terrifying intensity.

With monumental effort, Dominic forced his dry, cracked lips apart. Scraping the words past the plastic tubing of his oxygen mask, he delivered a command that would alter the course of the city.
“Lock the door.”
