Chapter 8 - RENATA’S DESPERATE RETURN

Ten minutes later, Renata’s car fishtail-turned into the driveway, tires screaming against the asphalt. She leaped out of her sedan before it had even finished rolling into park, sprinting through the shattered back sliding door with terror carved into every line of her face. “Sadie! Nolan!” she screamed, throwing open the bedroom door.
The kids flew out of the bedroom into their mother’s arms, sobbing tears of pure relief as Renata buried her face in their hair, rocking them back and forth on the floor. When she finally looked up at me, standing bruised and shaken with the wooden bat still in my hand, her eyes filled with profound gratitude. “You saved them,” Renata choked out, pulling me into a fierce, three-way hug. “You saved my babies.”
