Chapter 1 - THE CODE WORD AND THE PORCH CAMERA

“Open this door, you stupid little babysitter, or I’ll open it for you.” The smiling grandmother said it with a smile while holding a brown grocery bag on the porch in Cedar Hollow, Ohio. For four months, I had babysat Sadie (nine) and Nolan (six) while their mother, Renata, worked grueling shifts at St. Agnes Medical Center. The job felt normal until Nolan whispered a secret code word to me: lighthouse. Sadie explained that if they used that word, their grandmother, Evelyn Cross—who was legally barred by a judge from approaching them due to a severe mental decline and aggressive harassment—was trying to reach them.
When Evelyn knocked on the front door that September afternoon, the kids froze with animal terror. I rushed them upstairs, locked the deadbolt, and called 911 while Evelyn syrupuously claimed she was just bringing groceries. Then, through the porch camera, I watched her walk to her blue sedan, pull out a metal baseball bat, and disappear around the side of the house.
