Chapter 4 - POLICE SIRENS IN THE DISTANCE

The wail of police sirens cut through the afternoon air outside, growing louder by the second as cruisers sped toward Cedar Hollow with lights flashing. Evelyn paused on the top step, her head tilting toward the window as the Doppler effect of the sirens signaled their imminent arrival. Panic flared in her voice. “Bitch called the cops,” she muttered, abandoning her singsong tone for a harsh, venomous snarl.
Instead of retreating, however, Evelyn gripped the metal baseball bat tighter and lunged toward the bedroom door, convinced she could snatch the kids and escape through the rear window before officers breached the perimeter. She reached out with her free hand, grabbed the brass doorknob, and violently wrenched it open.
