Chapter 5 - THE BEDROOM DOOR OPENED
The bedroom door swung open wide, crashing against the interior wall. Evelyn stepped across the threshold, silver hair slightly disheveled, her eyes wild and bloodshot, holding the metal bat raised and ready to swing. She expected to find two terrified children cowering in the corner. Instead, she found me standing directly in her path, blocking the closet door entirely.
Evelyn’s cruel smile returned, a terrifying distortion of affection. “Oh, look. The little babysitter wants to play hero. Move aside, girl, or I’ll split your skull.” She raised the bat higher, taking a menacing step forward. She thought she had cornered an defenseless college student who would cower and beg for mercy. She had no idea she was staring down an NCAA-bound softball player who had spent four years drilling batting cages and learning how to protect her team.
