Chapter 6 - THE SOFTBALL PLAYER’S STANCE

I widened my stance, dropping my weight into my back leg just as I had standing in the batter’s box against a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball. “You take one more step, and you’re going to find out why you don’t break into a ballplayer’s house,” I warned, my voice cutting through the bedroom like a blade.
Evelyn laughed, a harsh, grating sound, and swung the metal bat in a wide horizontal arc aimed directly at my ribs. I didn't flinch. I stepped forward into the swing, using the heavy wooden bat to parry the metal rod with a deafening CLANG that vibrated up to my shoulders. Before she could recover her balance, I pivoted on my heel and swung the wooden bat in a crisp, clean arc, connecting squarely with her wrist. The metal bat slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the hardwood floor.
