Chapter 11 - THE GRANDMOTHER’S DEFENSE

Two weeks after the incident, Evelyn’s defense attorney filed a motion for a psychiatric hearing, attempting to argue that her client’s home invasion was the result of a temporary medical episode and that she should be released back into outpatient care with family supervision.
Renata and I attended the court hearing as witnesses. When Evelyn’s lawyer tried to paint her as a harmless, confused old woman seeking family connection, I took the stand. I calmly detailed the porch camera footage, the duffel bags in her trunk, the metal bat, and the terrifying cold calculation in her eyes when she smashed through the kitchen glass. The judge denied the motion for release without hesitation.
