Chapter 7 - THE ARREST ON THE LANDING
Before Evelyn could lunge for her dropped weapon, heavy boots thundered up the staircase, and three Cedar Hollow police officers burst into the bedroom with weapons drawn. “Police! Drop the weapon! Hands where we can see them!” shouted the lead officer, sweeping the room with his flashlight.
Evelyn dropped instantly to her knees, raising her hands in the air while immediately twisting her face into an innocent, weeping expression. “Officer, thank God! This violent girl attacked me for bringing my grandchildren groceries!” she wailed, sobbing dramatically. The officer didn't blink. He handcuffed her wrists behind her back, hoisted her to her feet, and led her past the closet door. As she was hauled away in cuffs, Sadie and Nolan peeked out from the closet, their eyes wide with awe and relief.
