Chapter 11 - Facing the Board

The conference room at Northstar Capital Group was spotless, cold, expensive, and thoroughly professional. Caleb stood near the floor-to-ceiling window when Nia walked in, looking older, exhausted, and thoroughly exposed.
Turning to face her, he whispered her name. She stopped several feet away, holding up a hand to stop him from speaking further. His shoulders slumped as he confessed that he knew he messed up. Nia corrected him calmly, stating that he hadn't just messed up—he had made conscious choices.
Swallowing hard, Caleb claimed he never meant for it to go that far. Nia fired back that that was precisely the problem: he never thought his greed would go far enough to actually cost him something. When he whispered that he loved her, Nia acknowledged it softly, adding, “But you loved being forgiven more,” destroying whatever defense he had left.
