Chapter 1 - The Hospital Doorway

Nia Walker had spent years believing that marriage meant standing beside someone even when the world became difficult. She believed in forgiveness, patience, and giving the person you loved one more chance. But everything changed the night she walked out of the hospital. She had barely recovered from a frightening medical episode. A thin hospital bracelet still circled her wrist, her body was weak, and her heart was already hurting from weeks of feeling abandoned by the man who had promised never to leave her alone.
Then she saw him. Caleb Mercer. Her husband. Standing in the hospital hallway with his arm wrapped around another woman, Sloan Hart. Nia stopped several feet away, gripping the rail of a wheelchair as the truth settled over her. Caleb looked at her, and for a brief second, surprise crossed his face—not guilt, not shame, but annoyance, as though Nia had interrupted something that belonged to him.
“Nia,” he said, quickly removing his hand from Sloan's waist, “you should be in bed.” Nia stared at him, then at Sloan, who didn't apologize or even look embarrassed. Instead, Sloan lifted her chin with the calm confidence of someone who believed she had every right to be standing there. Nia felt something inside her go completely still. “Don't,” she whispered, her voice tight with disbelief. When Caleb told her not to make a scene and that she was merely emotional, the realization that he was worried about who might be watching hurt more than seeing Sloan in his arms.
