Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Empty HouseThe first week without Lena was manageable only in the most technical sense. The house did not fall apart, school lunches were packed, and the chores were finished, but the spirit of the home was completely gone. Mason remained unusually quiet, staring at his dinner plates and asking questions Ethan couldn't answer.

Ray’s wife, Maria, introduced Ethan to Victoria Hale, a polished business consultant visiting from out of town. Victoria was sharp, sophisticated, and attentive. She looked at Ethan not as a grieving widower, but as an attractive, capable man. They went out for dinner, and Victoria was genuinely kind to Mason, listening intently to his school stories.
Yet, despite Victoria’s charm, Ethan found his mind constantly drifting back to Lena. Every laugh Victoria shared made Ethan remember the soft, genuine hum Lena used to make while cooking in the kitchen.
While sitting on the porch one evening, Victoria looked at Ethan thoughtfully. "Do you miss her?" she asked plainly.
"The house feels wrong without her," Ethan admitted, looking out toward the horizon. "Things don't run the way they used to."
Victoria offered a gentle, sympathetic smile. "Ethan, whatever you feel about Lena, you need to figure it out before you try to start anything new with anyone else. Unfinished business will always ruin a new beginning."

That night, Ethan sat down with Ray and Maria. "She loved you, Ethan," Maria said directly, placing a warm hand on the table. "Everyone saw it except you. She cared for Mason as if he were her own son. She stayed for four years because her heart was in this house."
Ethan froze as the realization settled deep in his core. He hadn't just lost a helper; he had unknowingly pushed away the only woman who had truly cared for him and his son in years.
