Chapter 3 - THE QUIET BEFORE THE STORM

I drove straight to the emergency clinic, ignoring the throbbing agony in my palm. The doctor gently cleaned the burn, wrapped it in thick white gauze, and prescribed strong painkillers. I filled the prescription, but I didn't take a single pill. I needed a clear head.
By the time I reached my downtown loft—a property Ivan didn’t even know I owned—the sun had set, casting long, bruised shadows across the skyline. My phone was already buzzing incessantly. Missed calls from Ivan. Missed calls from Cynthia. Texts ranging from furious threats to pathetic pleas to come back home.
“Elena, answer the phone right now or you’ll regret it.” “Please, honey, it was just a joke that went too far. Let's talk.”
I blocked both numbers without reading the rest.
Instead, I opened my laptop and plugged in the matte-black flash drive. Files loaded instantly onto the screen: bank statements, offshore transfer logs, forged signature audits, and text messages between Ivan and his corporate mistress, embezzling funds directly from the Vanguard expansion project. Ivan thought he was the master chess player, but he hadn't realized he was playing on a board I built from scratch.
Ten years ago, when Ivan was a broke junior architect with big dreams and zero capital, it was my family inheritance that funded his first firm. I stepped back to let him shine, acting as the quiet partner while he took the spotlight. I thought love meant sacrifice. I learned too late that to men like Ivan, sacrifice was just an invitation to exploit.
My phone flashed with a new notification. An email from Marcus Vance, senior partner at Vanguard’s primary legal counsel.

“Elena, I heard about what happened today. If the rumors are true about the security footage and the restructuring documents, we need to talk immediately. Name the time and place.”
A slow smile curved my lips. Marcus was a shark, but he loved a winner. And by Monday morning, I was going to own the entire ocean.
