Chapter 11 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

Friday evening arrived with a soft, warm autumn rain tapping against the floor-to-ceiling windows of my penthouse loft. The city lights below twinkled like a constellation of fallen stars, casting a cozy, golden glow across the room.
David and I sat on the plush velvet sofa, sharing takeout Italian food and laughing over old college stories. The ease between us felt natural, effortless, and deeply grounding.
“So,” David said, leaning back and setting his wine glass down on the marble coffee table. “A massive corporate takeover, defeating a toxic ex-husband, dominating national news headlines, and successfully rebranding a multi-million-dollar empire—all in less than one week. What’s next on Elena’s master agenda?”
I smiled, swirling the remaining red wine in my glass. “Honestly? Sleeping for twelve uninterrupted hours. And maybe... learning how to cook a steak indoors, far away from any open grills.”
David chuckled warmly, his eyes softening as he looked at me. “Deal. But next time you want a steak, I’m doing the cooking. And I promise you won't need to smash any furniture or threaten anyone with a spatula.”
The humor faded into a gentle, electric silence. David shifted closer, his gaze dropping briefly to my lips before locking back onto my eyes. The warmth of his presence pushed away the lingering cold shadows of my past marriage.
“Elena,” David murmured, his voice dropping an octave, rich with sincerity. “From the moment I saw you stand up to that monster in your backyard, I knew you were the most extraordinary woman I had ever laid eyes on. I know everything has happened so fast, but... I don't want to just be your investigative ally.”
My heart skipped a beat. The air in the room suddenly felt thin and sweet.
“David...” I started softly.
“Just let me take you out on a real date,” he whispered, gently reaching out and tucking a stray lock of hair behind my ear. His fingers brushed my cheek with infinite tenderness. “No cameras, no lawyers, no corporate boardrooms. Just you and me.”

I looked into his sincere, steady eyes and felt something beautiful and unbreakable bloom in my chest.
“I’d love that,” I whispered.
