Chapter 14 - THE RING OF TRUTH

That evening, David surprised me with reservations at the rooftop restaurant where we had shared our first real conversation months ago. The city skyline sparkled beneath a blanket of twilight stars, and a soft violin melody drifted through the ambient evening air.
We sat at a corner table overlooking the river, enjoying a quiet dinner filled with laughter, shared memories, and effortless conversation.
As the waiter cleared our dessert plates, David suddenly went quiet. He reached inside his jacket pocket, taking a slow, deliberate breath.
My breath caught in my throat. My intuition, finely tuned from years of deception, instantly told me this moment was entirely different.
David stood up from his chair, walked around the small table, and dropped gracefully down onto one knee right beside me. The surrounding diners subtly turned their attention toward us, murmuring with delighted anticipation.
“Elena,” David began, his voice steady, clear, and rich with emotion as he pulled open a small, elegant velvet box. Inside rested a stunning, brilliant-cut diamond ring that caught the starlight like a captured firefly. “When I first met you, you were standing in the wreckage of a fire you started to reclaim your own life. You didn't just survive your past—you burned down every wall that held you captive and built an empire from the ashes.”
Tears prickled at the corners of my eyes, blurring the city lights into shimmering pools of gold.
“I didn't just fall in love with your strength, your brilliance, or your resilience,” David continued, looking up into my eyes with absolute devotion. “I fell in love with your heart, your kindness, and the way you bring warmth and light into every room you enter. I want to spend the rest of my life building with you, protecting you, and standing beside you—not behind you, not in front of you, but right beside you as an equal partner.”
He held up the ring box, his hands steady as a rock.
“Will you marry me, Elena?”
The entire rooftop terrace held its breath.

I didn't hesitate for a single second. The ghosts of the past were completely gone, replaced by a radiant, beautiful future.
“Yes,” I whispered, tears spilling over my lashes as a radiant smile broke across my face. “Yes, a million times yes.”
