Chapter 2 - The Secret of the HeiressThe night before the wedding, Brenda had invited Lily to her apartment under the guise of making peace.

“I was wrong, Lily,” Brenda had wept, pouring two glasses of sparkling wine. “You deserve Williams. Please come to my room—I have a family heirloom I want to give you as a wedding gift.”
Lily, whose gentle heart always chose forgiveness, had followed Brenda into the dimly lit bedroom. In the center of the room stood the massive bronze mirror, its surface shimmering with an ethereal, greenish-silver mist.
“Look into the glass, Lily,” Brenda had whispered, stepping behind her. “Tell me what you see.”
As Lily stepped closer, Brenda pulled a silver dagger from her robe, pricked her own thumb, and wiped a smear of blood across the ornate bronze frame while reciting a forbidden ritual passed down through her grandmother’s lineage.
“A face for a face, a life for a life. Let the reflection inherit the light, and let the truth remain in shadow.”
The room had dropped forty degrees in a second. The mirror’s glass rippled like dark water. A powerful, invisible force surged out, wrapping around Lily’s waist and dragging her screaming into the glass.
Before Lily could process the horror, she was pulled into a cold, airless void behind the mirror’s surface.
She turned around, beating her hands against the glass, but no sound escaped. Through the transparent barrier, she watched in horror as Brenda’s features rippled and shifted, transforming into an exact duplicate of Lily’s face, hair, and voice.

Brenda stepped up to the mirror, adjusting Lily’s diamond earrings, and smiled directly at her trapped best friend.
“Thank you for the life, Lily,” Brenda whispered with a cold smirk. “I’ll take good care of Williams.”
