Chapter 8 - SECURING THE PERIMETER AND THE POLICE

With the primary suspects restrained and the immediate threat neutralized, the basement transformed into an official crime scene. Crime scene investigators from the state bureau of investigation rolled in heavy equipment, setting up high-intensity tripod lights, dusting for latent fingerprints, and meticulously logging every piece of evidence.

They bagged the heavy industrial chain, the sledgehammer recovered from the garage tool rack, the drug vials used for forced sedatives, and the bloodied clothes Wyatt had been wearing.

Down in the corner, the emergency medical team worked with absolute professional precision. They carefully transferred Wyatt from the concrete floor onto a specialized vacuum-splint stretcher, stabilizing his shattered knee to prevent further vascular damage.

I knelt beside the gurney, gripping my son’s hand tightly. His eyes were heavy, the shock and relief crashing over him all at once.

“You’re safe now, son,” I murmured, my thumb brushing back a lock of damp hair from his forehead. “The nightmare is over.”

“Dad... how did you... how did you orchestrate all this?” Wyatt whispered, his voice trembling as paramedics secured the IV lines. “I thought... I thought I was going to die down here.”

“You’re a Yates, Wyatt,” I smiled faintly, the old truck driver persona dropping away entirely to reveal the patriarch who commanded an empire. “We don't break easily. And nobody touches my family and gets away with it.”

As the medical team wheeled him toward the rear service exit where an advanced life-support ambulance waited with its engine idling, I stood up and straightened my jacket. The air outside was freezing, biting clean and sharp against my face, washing away the foul stench of the basement dungeon.

The New Year had officially arrived, bringing with it not celebration, but absolute, unyielding justice.
